If you are considering domestic adoption in the U.S., you are likely feeling a mix of excitement and hope, and you may have many questions. That’s completely normal. Adoption is a beautiful way to build a family, but the process may feel confusing at first, especially if you don’t know where to begin. This Adoption Guide walks you through domestic adoption in the United States in a clear, honest, and approachable way, so you know what to expect.

What Does “Domestic Adoption” Actually Mean?

Domestic Adoption means adopting a child who is born and lives in the United States. Since 2004, Building Arizona Families (BAF) has been honored to walk beside families like yours, offering compassion, expertise, and unwavering support through every step of the adoption journey.

Having experienced adoption professionals by your side will make all the difference. As a licensed nonprofit agency with an A+ BBB rating, Building Arizona Families Adoption Agency is guided by integrity, compassion, and over two decades of experience helping families grow. We take pride in providing ethical, personal, and deeply caring support throughout the entire process.

Who Can Adopt?

One of the most common questions people ask is, “Do we qualify to adopt?”

While requirements vary by state and agency, most prospective adoptive parents need to:

  • Be at least 23 years old with at least a 10-year age difference between you and the child
  • Complete a Home Study: BAF will help walk you through every step of this process
  • Pass all background checks
  • Meet health and financial requirements

Completing an Adoption Home Study

The Adoption Home Study is an important part of every adoption process. It ensures you are ready to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home. Ask your adoption professional whether they are licensed to perform the home study in your state of residence. Click here to learn more about BAF’s Adoption Fee list.  Our compassionate adoption team guides you through:

  • Background checks
  • Personal interviews
  • Home visits
  • Education and preparation

We approach the Adoption Home Study with care and support, so you feel confident throughout the process. We will:

  • Assist you with the required documentation
  • Guide you with what to expect during the interview
  • Help you understand the types of questions that may be asked

Create Your Adoptive Family Profile

Your Adoptive Family Profile tells your story — who you are, what you value, and the kind of life you will offer a child. We will help you craft a beautiful, authentic profile that reflects your warmth, dreams, and love.

Matching With a Birth Mother

Once your profile is ready, we’ll share it with expectant mothers whose preferences align with yours.

This is where adoption’s heartbeat begins — a connection built on trust, respect, and shared love. From your first conversation through placement, our Adoption Team will be with you every step of the way.

Placement & Post-Placement Support

Our involvement doesn’t end at placement. We will guide you through post-placement visits, counseling, and finalization — ensuring your family always feels supported and cared for. At BAF, we are not just here for the process — we are here for your journey, your family, and your future.

A Few Final Thoughts

Domestic adoption is not a single moment — it’s a lifelong journey. There will be paperwork, waiting, and maybe some uncertainty, but there will also be connection, growth, and love in ways you may never have imagined.

If you’re considering adoption, take your time, ask questions, and surround yourself with people who support you. You don’t have to have everything figured out to take the first step. If you are ready to learn more about our Domestic Adoption Program, we would be honored to connect with you.
