What Is an Adoption Home Study?
“Home Study” might sound intimidating, but it’s about ensuring your home is safe, stable, and ready for a child. Here’s what it involves:
Safety Comes First
Every adoptive family undergoes criminal background checks and child abuse registry screenings. A caseworker will also visit your home, but don’t worry! Your home doesn’t have to be perfect or Pinterest-worthy. The goal is simple: make sure your home is safe and child-friendly. That means:
- Working smoke detectors
- Locked cabinets for cleaning supplies and medications
- Safe living conditions throughout your home
Stability Matters
Raising a child requires a stable environment. You’ll provide with a list of required documentation including:
- Pay stubs, tax returns, and a monthly budget
- 3–5 non-relative references who can speak to your character, relationships, and readiness to parent
Health and Readiness
Finally, your doctor will confirm that you’re mentally and physically prepared to take on the lifelong commitment of parenthood.
