Adopting a newborn is one of the most emotional, rewarding, and life-changing journeys you can take as a family. Whether adoption has always been your dream or you’re just beginning to explore the path of adoption, bringing a baby into your life through adoption is a beautiful way to grow your family. So, how does adoption work? Let’s walk you through how to adopt a newborn baby, step by step.
What Is Newborn Adoption?
Newborn adoption—also referred to as infant adoption—involves welcoming a baby into your home from birth up to 6 months old. In many cases, adoptive parents meet the baby at the hospital shortly after birth. But before that beautiful moment, a few important steps must happen.
Choose the Right Adoption Agency
Choosing an experienced, ethical adoption professional is the first and most important decision.
At Building Arizona Families (BAF), we’ve spent over 20 years helping create families through safe, compassionate, and legally sound adoption services. Our team is available 24/7 to support you from your first questions to post-adoption support. No two adoptions are alike. That’s why we customize every journey to fit your needs.
Complete Your Adoption Home Study
Before you can adopt, you’ll need to complete a home study, which confirms you’re ready to provide a safe and loving environment for a child.
At BAF, your dedicated adoption specialist will walk you through each step of the home study, which includes:
- Completing paperwork
- Background checks
- Interviews with family members
- Home visits
Yes, it sounds like a lot—but don’t worry. We’re here to make it manageable and clear every step of the way.
Create Your Adoption Profile
This is where you have the opportunity to introduce yourself to expectant mothers considering adoption.
Your adoption profile tells your story—with photos, personal details, and insights into your lifestyle, values, home, and family. It’s more than just a summary—it’s a way to connect with a birth mother and help her envision the loving life her child could have with you.
Matching with a Birth Mother
Once your profile is ready, BAF will begin sharing it with birth mothers whose adoption plans align with your preferences.
A match occurs when a birth mother selects an adoptive family. This can happen at any trimester in the pregnancy. In most cases, there’s an opportunity to build a relationship with the birth mother beforehand, depending on the level of openness she desires.
The Birth and Placement
When the baby is born, the hospital stay follows a birth plan developed with both the birth and adoptive parents in mind. According to state laws, the birth mother must wait 72 hours after delivery to give legal consent. Once the Adoption Consents are signed, they are irrevocable.
Legal Finalization
After the baby is placed with you, there’s a waiting period—usually a few months—before the adoption can be finalized in court. During this time, a social worker will visit your home for post-placement check-ins to ensure everyone is adjusting well and that both you and the baby are thriving.
