Understanding the Adoption Home Study: A Closer Look

An Adoption Home Study is a thoughtful, structured process that helps ensure a child enters a safe and loving home. Let’s walk through what that really looks like:

Background Checks

• All adoptive families complete criminal background checks and child abuse registry screenings. 
• It’s a standard step to help ensure a safe, secure home. We walk you through every piece of paperwork.

Home Safety Inspection

• A caseworker will visit your home to make sure your house is in compliance with the Arizona State Adoption Codes.  We will point out anything that needs to be changed or updated so you will have the opportunity to correct it before the second Adoption Home Study visit.

Financial Proof

You will need to provide documents like tax returns, pay stubs, and a general overview of your finances

Personal References

You will need to provide personal references. You’ll choose 2 family members and 3 personal references (friends, coworkers, and/or mentors) who can describe your character, relationships, and the kind of parent you’ll be.

Questionnaires

You will answer thoughtful questions about your childhood, relationships, parenting style, motivation to adopt, and more. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the kind of parent you want to be.

Medical Reports

A doctor will confirm you are mentally and physically prepared to care for a child. It’s one more piece of reassurance for everyone involved from you to the agency to the child.
