Starting the adoption journey is exciting but may also bring a lot of questions. One of the first steps in an adoption journey is an Adoption Home Study. Many people worry about this step. The good news is that a home study is not a test. It is simply a way to make sure children are placed in safe, loving homes. Since 2004, Building Arizona Families (BAF) has helped families with our home study adoption services. As a licensed, non-profit Arizona adoption agency, we are here to help every step of the way.

What Is an Adoption Home Study?

An Adoption Home Study is a review of your home, background, and readiness to adopt. Every family must complete an Adoption Home Study before adopting a child. This applies to domestic, foster care, and international adoptions.

Why Choose Building Arizona Families?

Choosing the right adoption agency is important. Families choose Building Arizona Families because we offer:

What Happens During an Adoption Home Study?

The Home Study includes a few simple steps. We will guide you through each one.

Background Checks

All adoptive parents must complete background checks. These checks include:

  • Criminal history reviews
  • Child abuse registry screenings

Home Visit

An adoption caseworker will visit your home. The goal is to make sure your home is safe and meets Arizona adoption requirements. The visit is about safety, not appearance. Your home does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be a safe place for a child.

Financial Information

You will provide basic financial records, such as:

  • Tax returns
  • Pay stubs
  • Employment information

These documents show that you can provide financial stability for a child.

Personal References

You will also provide references from people who know you well. Most families provide:

  • Two family references
  • Three personal references

Personal references may include friends, coworkers, or mentors. These references help us learn more about your character and support system.

Interviews and Questionnaires

You will answer questions about your life and family.

  • Childhood experiences
  • Family relationships
  • Parenting goals
  • Reasons for adoption

This helps us get to know you better. It also gives you time to think about the parent you want to be.

Medical Forms

Your doctor will complete a medical report. The report confirms that you are physically and emotionally able to care for a child.

We Are Here to Help

The Adoption Home Study may seem like a big step. But you do not have to do it alone. At Building Arizona Families, we will guide you through the process and answer your questions along the way.

Our goal is to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident. We are honored to be part of your adoption journey.
