For many hopeful adoptive parents, the words “Adoption Home Study” can feel overwhelming. You may picture a long inspection, difficult questions, or a process designed to judge your family.
An Adoption Home Study is not about finding reasons to say “no.” It’s about helping families prepare to say “yes” to a child’s future.
At Building Arizona Families (BAF), we have helped families across Arizona navigate this journey with confidence.

What Is an Adoption Home Study?
An Adoption Home Study is a required process that helps ensure children are placed in safe, stable, and loving homes.
The process usually includes:
- All adoptive families complete criminal background checks and child abuse registry screenings.
- It’s a standard step to help ensure a safe, secure home. We walk you through every piece of paperwork.
- An Adoption Specialist will visit your home to ensure your home complies with the Arizona State Adoption Codes.
- We will point out anything that needs to be changed or updated.
Sharing Your Story
For many families, sharing their life story becomes the most meaningful part. You will have conversations about your life, relationships, experiences, and hopes for the future. You may be asked about:
- Your childhood
- Family relationships
- Marriage or partnership history
- Parenting beliefs
- Life experiences
- Reasons for choosing adoption
There are no perfect answers. Adoption professionals want to understand who you are and how you can provide a loving, supportive home for a child. The most important thing you can do is be honest. As part of the process, you’ll provide personal references from people who know you well. Typically, you need:
- Two family references
- 3–5 references from non-relatives, folks who can speak to your character and your readiness to parent. You will need to provide personal references. You will choose 2 family members and 3 personal references (friends, coworkers, and/or mentors) who can describe your character, relationships, and the kind of parent you will be.
