The BAF Domestic Adoption
July 2023 Newsletter
From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, President and CEO
Happy July! I hope it’s been going great so far. Here in Phoenix, the weather is just sizzling! Highs up to 118* Fahrenheit! Being pregnant can be uncomfortable enough, but I can’t imagine being pregnant and homeless in this heat! Despite the heat, there has been so much JOY around here! This month, we are celebrating the birth of eight babies, including a set of twins (photos next month)! These precious infants were placed in the loving arms of their adoptive families. We celebrate the gift of life, the blessing of parenting, and fresh starts for courageous, selfless birth mothers who chose bright futures for their babies. In other news, however, it is dangerously hot in
Phoenix, and the homeless population continues to grow. The largest homeless encampment is called the Zone, where violence, drugs, and desperation blend with elevated temperature due to the extreme heat. In the middle of this are pregnant women in crisis, some the victims of domestic abuse, others struggling with mental illness, addictions, human trafficking, sexual abuse, or a heartbreaking combination of all of them.
Finding these women and their unborn babies takes on an urgent tone as temperatures skyrocket. My cell phone is always on, and we tell women to reach out 24/7. They are desperate for help, but finding them is a challenge. Please help spread the word – please take a moment to print out the flyer and pass it out as you see women in need. Here is the link.
In the meantime, thank you for caring! When people join us in caring, lives change. I hope you will take as moment to watch Robin’s story. Word of mouth is how she found us, and now both she and her baby girl have a bright future, not to mention the joy of the adoptive family! It’s really such a miracle, and it can start with something as simple as handing out a flyer!
Thank you again, I’m so grateful!
All the best,
Kelly Rourke-Scarry

Birth Mother Matters in Adoption Season 3, Episode 219: Substance Abuse During Pregnancy
Some pregnant women use drugs during their pregnancy. Drug exposure prenatally in adoption situations may cause concern and anxiety for hopeful adoptive parents. Learning more will help us understand and be able to make well-informed decisions.
Every year, at least once on this podcast we like to look at the current research and discuss any changes we have seen over the past year. We are not a medical facility, nor are we medical professionals, so this podcast is to discuss the available research and what we have seen as professionals in the adoption world.
