The BAF Domestic Adoption
June 2023 Newsletter

From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, President and CEO

I hope you and yours are doing well! Temperatures around the Valley of the Sun are certainly climbing, making me think of our pregnant birth mothers who have to manage the discomfort of being pregnant in the summer. It also made me think of an interview we just did with one of our birth mothers.

Tina was addicted and homeless when she found out she was pregnant. She knew she wasn’t ready to parent and didn’t want to subject her baby to the instability of life on the streets. She heard about Building Arizona Families through another homeless woman on the streets and decided to check it out.

Tina is a beautiful illustration of why we say that adoption is about unselfish love. Today she tells other pregnant women in crisis that adoption is an unselfish choice that gives children a better chance at life. Her son, Samson, is three now, with a wonderful adopted family. During her interview, she held pictures of Samson and pictures he drew for her. She choked up a bit as she spoke about her son but said choosing adoption for Samson was the most unselfish thing she could do for him. You can watch Tina’s interview HERE.

So many women like Tina are experiencing crisis pregnancies and unaware that they can make the lovingly unselfish choice of adoption for their unborn child. It’s what keeps me up at night – knowing how many women need help but don’t know where to turn to get the right help. Being pregnant creates a higher risk of homelessness, and homelessness creates a higher pregnancy risk. It’s a vicious cycle. Additionally, babies born to homeless mothers are at greater risk for serious health complications. It’s so important to get the word out to at-risk women. Please help us share the information about adoption. If you see a homeless woman on the streets, please give her one of our brochures. If she doesn’t need help, someone she knows might. You can download it HERE.

The beloved author, C.S. Lewis, stated, “Love is unselfishly choosing for another’s highest good.”  I think that sums up the act of placing one’s baby for adoption. Join me in reaching women who need to know about the gift of adoption they can give their unborn child. As always, thank you for caring so deeply about adoption and the many lives each adoption touches. I am grateful.

All the best,
