The Building Arizona Families Domestic Adoption
October 2023 Newsletter
From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, President and CEO
Nine babies in twenty days! Wow! The number is impressive but what really touches my heart is when I look closely at the faces of each of these precious babies. Every single one of these infants was placed in the loving arms of families who will nurture them and provide the opportunity for a bright future. Then, I can’t help but think of the courageous birth mothers who chose to give their unborn child the gift of life, and selflessly gave them the best opportunity for a happy, productive life. Not only that, but each of the birth mothers has the opportunity, through the support of the Donna K. Evans Foundation, to start their lives anew, free from dangerous circumstances, addictions, and unhealthy relationships. It’s why I always refer to adoption as the triple miracle – because at least three lives are transformed in wonderful ways.
And while we rejoice for the nine babies, their adoptive families, and birth mothers with a fresh start, we have to increase our outreach efforts to at risk pregnant women in Arizona. Why? Because the number of these women is growing dramatically. Maricopa County, where Phoenix is located, is the fastest growing county in the United States! The inflation rate is up 7.4% over last year. Rental housing rates increased 46% in Phoenix, and a whopping 124% in Tucson! Why is this important? Because it is directly tied to homelessness for people who were living paycheck to paycheck, just making ends meet before they could no longer afford to rent housing. From 2019 to 2023, homelessness increased by 54% in Maricopa County, and 35% of the unhoused are estimated to be women!
A homeless woman is very vulnerable – the likelihood of becoming pregnant while homeless is almost five times greater than women in safe housing. So, while we are grateful that the blazing heat has abated, we are well aware that there is a substantial humanitarian crisis right here, right now, and right where we live.
It’s one of the reasons I continue to reach out to you every month – because I know you care, and you will do what you can can to help. Don’t forget that most of these women are too afraid to seek help, so we reach out on a grassroots level wherever we can. You can play an important role in helping us reach these vulnerable women and their unborn babies, so they can have a chance at life and bright futures. Please take a moment to print out the flyer and pass it out as you see women in need. Share the link with friends and on your social media. If we can get lots of people involved in handing the flyer out at street corners while stopped at a traffic light, stores, or anywhere that homeless people gather, the word spreads virally among the homeless population. I think you, your friends, co-workers, and church can make a real difference. Here is the link. My cell phone is always on, and pregnant women in crisis can reach out 24/7.
Thank you for being passionate about the triple miracle of adoption. I am grateful!
All the best,
Kelly Rourke-Scarry
