The BAF Domestic Adoption
July 2022 Newsletter
From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, President and CEO
I hope you and yours are doing well! I also hope you live somewhere cooler than the Phoenix metro area right now! The very thought of my air conditioning going out right now is almost unbearable!
And, speaking of heat, we really have a crisis on our hands here. Since 2016,
The number of homeless people in Maricopa County, primarily around the Phoenix metro area, has at least TRIPLED. Phoenix has the highest rate of inflation in the nation, and the cost of housing is forcing people on to the streets. We also have the highest number of heat related deaths in the U.S. Temperatures are dangerously high for the unsheltered, and worse for the pregnant women are out sleeping in parks, near railroad tracks, in parking lots, and along the canals where tent cities have continued to proliferate.
Did you know that the average life expectancy of a homeless person is only fifty? It’s because homeless people are at greater risk for infectious and chronic illness, substance abuse, poor mental health, and being victimized by violence. Not only are the pregnant women at risk, but their unborn babies’ health is at risk.
We simply have to find these women and let them know we can help. They don’t have to live on the streets – they can be safe and so can their unborn baby. They can give their baby the greatest gift of all – life and a bright future through adoption. Can you help us get the word out? They can call or text us 24/7/365 at
. There is absolutely no cost for our adoption services. That includes helping to provide food, clothing, shelter, transportation, access to medical care, counseling services, and the day to day support during their pregnancy. We even offer support services after their baby is placed for adoption to help them move forward into their own successful future.
We simply can’t stand by and do nothing. Every homeless
pregnant woman represents two precious lives!

Also, inflation impacts our cost of doing business, and the budgets at Building Arizona Families are stretched pretty thin. We can’t stop reaching out though – lives are literally on the line. It costs us about $145 to locate homeless pregnant women to share our lifesaving solutions with them. And please remember that every adoption changes at least three lives – the unborn baby, the birth mother, and the adoptive family! I’m sure your budgets are stretched too, but I also know you care deeply about adoption. No gift is too small!
I am grateful for you and your compassionate heart towards vulnerable pregnant women in crisis and their precious unborn babies.
All the best,
