The BAF Domestic Adoption
May 2022 Newsletter

I hope you are doing well!  We are working hard over here at Building Arizona Families and are grateful for your continued support and concern for vulnerable pregnant women and unborn babies.  We celebrate every life that we have been privileged to be a part of for the almost two decades we have been involved in providing adoption services.

We have some very significant challenges right now.  As I am sure you are aware, inflation is rising.  It is impacts our most vulnerable populations the most.  In Maricopa County, Arizona where we are located, many are facing harsh realities of unaffordable housing. Housing costs have increased 29% since Q4 of 2020. As a result, unsheltered homelessness has increased by a whopping 92%!  In Maricopa County alone, there are over 3,000 vulnerable homeless women. Many of them are struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, or are fleeing domestic violence.  While we don’t have data on how many of these women are pregnant (and remember, this is just Maricopa County!), what we do know is that homeless dramatically increases the health risks for both mom and baby.  For the newborn, this often means low birth weight, chronic illness, and time spent in the neonatal ICU.

On top of this increase in homelessness, summer is upon us in the Valley of the Sun.  Extreme heat adds yet another serious risk factor for homeless pregnant women and their unborn babies.  As I am sure you can tell, these combined challenges create a tremendous sense of urgency for us.  We must find these homeless pregnant women and provide the immediate support they need to get them off the streets, into safe housing, provide medical care, and nutritious food to ensure that mom and baby are both as healthy as possible.

Unsheltered homelessness has increased

a whopping 92% in Maricopa County alone!

The clock is ticking on the summer heat wave that is about to descend on us. It costs us about $145 to locate homeless pregnant women so that we can help them.   It is $145 well invested because it changes three lives – the unborn baby, the birth mother, and the adoptive family!  Plus, it doesn’t have to be $145, no gift is too small! CLICK HERE if you can help, and as always, thank you for caring so deeply about unborn babies, birth moms, and adoptive families!

All the best,

April Baby!

We are celebrating the miracles of adoption! During the month of April, Building Arizona Families placed a beautiful baby girl into the arms of her loving family!

A Very Special Family

Jen, Joe, Tina and Samson join us for this episode of Birth Mother Matters in Adoption to discuss their open adoption.  Listen to how they have developed a an open adoption relationship with one another that transcends the “normal” open adoption- listen to why they chose this relationship, how they achieved it and how they plan on continuing to maintain it.  We can all learn from families who explore the boundaries of open adoption and succeed!
