BUILDING ARIZONA FAMILIES Domestic Adoption
October 2022 Newsletter
From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, President and CEO
I hope you and yours are doing well! It has been a busy month! Four precious babies entered the world and were placed into the arms of loving adoptive families. The joys of adoption always renew me and our team in the difficult times.
One of the challenges we face is the impact of addiction on the pregnant women we serve. Fentanyl has become such a danger to at risk pregnant women. Did you know that Arizona is a major cartel distribution hub for fentanyl? Our DEA agents have seized HALF of all of the fentanyl seized in the U.S. by DEA agents. Fentanyl is flooding across our borders, wreaking havoc on so many lives. The number of women we serve who are impacted has tripled over the last two years. It is such a lethal drug. FIVE Arizonans die every day as a result of fentanyl overdoses.
So many pregnant women in crisis are vulnerable. Once addicted, they are trapped in shame. They don’t know that we can help them even if they are addicted. They believe they do not have the option to give their baby the gift of life. We urgently need to reach these women to provide hope for them and their unborn child.
When pregnant women enter our Birth Mother program, we immediately get them the healthcare and counseling services they need. They can be freed from their addiction and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Then, through the miracle of adoption, both the birth mother and their baby can have bright futures.
Once the baby is placed, we don’t just exit the birth mother’s life. Through the Donna K. Evans Foundation, we stay involved, helping our birth mothers take steps towards productive lives. This includes ongoing group support sessions, assisting with school enrollment or job applications, access to our food and clothing pantry, and more. You can find out more HERE.
We have created a flyer to hand out at parks, street corners, libraries, shelters – anywhere there are at risk pregnant women. We will help them 24/7/365.
All the best,
