Infant domestic adoption, or domestic infant adoption, is a formal way of referring to the private adoption of a newborn in the United States. This type of adoption includes the consent of the parents who relinquish legal parental rights and the adoptive family, which differs from adoption from the foster care system after parental rights are severed due to abuse and neglect.
State laws govern infant domestic adoption, but all states require a home study which includes background checks of the adoptive family and all adults living in the home, including criminal records and child abuse and neglect central registries, to ensure the safety and well-being of the infant being adopted.
Infant Domestic Adoption is Available for Families in Any State
Building Arizona Families is licensed to provide infant domestic adoption services to families living in any state, so it is essential to understand the requirements of the state where one resides. The birth mother or birth parents must reside in Arizona for Building Arizona Families to provide oversight of the adoption process. For adoptive families residing in Arizona, prospective adoptive parents and each adult living in the adoptive family’s home must complete a background check, which includes state and federal criminal records and central registry records checks that include any history of child welfare referrals.
While background checks are stringent for infant domestic adoption, they are crucial to protect the well-being of the infant who is being adopted. More state-by-state information is available at the Child Welfare Information Gateway HERE.
