Children in the U.S. have started to return to school. Getting ready to go back to school is great fun for many U.S. kids. Moms and dads take them shopping for new clothes, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. They get fresh haircuts, new glasses, and school physicals to prepare for fall sports. They look forward to returning to school, reuniting with friends, and participating in extracurricular activities.
Sadly, the experience for U.S. foster children is far different. There are so many compelling reasons why there is such an urgent need for loving people to adopt foster children! They are often starting at a new school due to changing foster or group homes over the summer. They move an average of two to three times a year, so there are no consistent friendships, teachers, mentors, or neighborhoods to support them. Every time they move, they lose ground academically, so foster children are also typically behind in school.\
Clothes, shoes, backpacks, and extracurricular activities are all dictated by state child welfare services budgets, so the new fads are rarely sported by foster children. Looking different and feeling different further isolates foster children. They already carry the deep wounds from neglect and abuse at the hands of people who were supposed to love and protect them.
If ever there was a circumstance where the power of love can change a child’s life, it is through families adopting foster children. Foster children long for safe, stable homes without the pressure of being uprooted several times a year. They pray for loving parents to provide the nurturing oversight that every child needs. This loving environment has the power to transform hurting foster children into joyful children with bright futures ahead of them.
